Another Competition Question

Submitted by Andy on 07/10/2003. ( andy@gymopc.com ) 64.19.74.183

At past shows I have noticed that some mounts have an envelope marked "Judge". Was just wondering what a competitor would write to the judge about the piece he/she has entered? If anyone of you has done this, what did your note contain?

Thanks! Andy

$20's and $50's

The envelope may contain photos reference or showing how he made his own form. It also may have excuses. like; I had a car wreck on the way to the show, or UPS ran a fork lift into my piece (really happened). They usually aren't needed, but sometimes giving the judge a heads up can avoid confusion later.

I guess the $20's are for a third place ribbon and the $50's for a second. How much do you charge for a first? LOL. Just kiddin'. See ya at the nationals.

Unusual Specimens or Poses

This response submitted by Old Fart on 07/10/2003. ( ) 64.122.57.69

If you mount something unusual, that a judge may not have seen before or something that may be an unusual color(usually a fish) that you want to give the judge some idea of what it is or was supposed to look like. Or if you have an "unusual" pose that you want your mount in, you should have some photographic reference to prove that your specimen could actually do what you are depicting.

Extra points may be achieved if you have done something above the norm in putting together your mount and you want the judge to be aware of it. A great example of this would be the "minnow" mounts at the World show last spring. They were mounted on carved bodies and a step by step record was provided in a photo album for the judge. It was VERY impressive.

On the other hand, you had better make sure that what you show in your reference photos is properly exicuted in your mount. I saw a great example of this in a show many years ago. It was a small animal, fox, coyote or something on that order. The taxidermist had a photo of a live animal looking to the side with the eyes(very extreme) but the photo clearly showed that it was possible. The mount was well done in that respect. Unfortunitly the photo showed the proper nose and ear position and he did not pay enough attention to his reference when he mounted the critter.
