I have checked the archive, but I stil have some ?s. I rebuilt a broken point on a whitetail rack using 12ga. wire and cream colored apoxie sculpt. Now, I know I need to sand it or rasp it to final shape...no problem there. When I go to stain the repaired area, should I use wood stain or potassium permanganate? If I use permanganate, how do I mix it up and what do I mix it with? Also, do I need to prime the apoxie with paint first, or will the apoxie accept stain or permanganate on its own? Any advise is appreciated!

I use walnut stain and then when its dry steel wool it and then I use a dry brush with ackylic paints, When you spend a little time on this it is undectable. On elk antler points I will use a dremel tool to carve in the little grooves in the fake antler after filing and sanding.
YOu have to use paint to get the exact color match. Stain
is really not even neccessary find a good base color and then
dry brush on other colors and fine tip the darker lines in.
The best way already IS in the archives. You just missed it. Use the cream colored (natural) Apoxie to build the antler interior over your wires or you blemish. Sand to match. Then cover with a very thin coat of Epo-Grip Antler Repair. Let it harden and sand it with very fine sandpaper. Then STAIN it with either wood stain or potassium permanganate. You can control the darkness by the amount you put on the antler. Then buff it and afterwards, take some natural bees wax and rub over the repair. Buff it and I defy anyone to tell where the repair was made without getting right up on it. Takes a little practice, but it's the best method out there. Far better than ever mixing paint into the equation.
