I am toying with the idea of using clay instead of paper mache to rebuild the muscles/smooth out the skull cap are on deer. Is this a viable alternative? Have you had good/bad luck with this?
Thanks for your help.

Many if not most of us gave up using papier mache years ago. Personally, I've used Bondo thickened with Cabosil for about the last 25 and I like it much better. I still sculpt eye brow muscles and fill voids with clay, but papier mache was never used there anyway.
George used the 'Correct Spelling' of "PAPIER MACHE"...unlike erroniously used in every catalog in the Industry...can tell he's a downhearted true 'Old Timer'.
French Word..."Papier Mache'...Paper that is mashed into a pulp.

Hey Paul
Clay works well. I use clay to smooth out the skull plate on my deer. I usualy set the antlers in bond first so i don't have to use as much clay. It is easier and a lot less measy to use than paper mache. MichelleW
I buy ear base (think it's called Taxi Friend) from Touchstone. I'm sure other suppliers carry it, though. Mix it to a stiff consistency. You can mist it with water to smooth it. (Most of the time, I don't have to do that, unless it gets a little too dry.) It's lightweight, too. Not sure if it is cheaper than clay.
You don't have to be French to eat Fries, either...even though they were created in Belgium.
Fur yewr edification m'friend...there is NO WORD like 'Paper Mache' in the Dictionary. It is spelled 'Papier Mache'...just like there is no word like 'Mashay'...it's 'Mache'...still a French word.
(Think we needs to git off this Frenchy-hating thingy and git on with life...it's too shgort as it is...'Carpe Diem').
