Search Problems

Submitted by Russ Harrod on 07/20/2003. ( rharrod@hsonline.net ) 64.77.158.107

I have read this forum for over a year now, and have never been able to use the orange search button. When I hit the orange search, it takes me to the google search, and when I type in the subject, and enter, the computer locks up. The Ctrl,Alt,Del, will not even work to get me to end task. The only way I can recover is shut down and reboot. I have sent two E-mails to Ken, the administrator, but have not recieved an answer. Does anyone have any thoughts as to why this happens? This is the only place that I have tried to access that makes this happen. Any help is certainly apprieciated. Thanks Russ

In all seriousness, Ive never NOT gotten a reply from Ken even. Marty, where are you when we need you for computer support. Russ, you might wanna try asking this again with Marty in your title. Hes good.

Not enough SDRAM Memory in your computer.

This response submitted by John C on 07/20/2003. ( ) 208.180.205.191

Yep, thats what it is. SDRAM needs to be improved. The compter I have used for the past several weeks does the same thing its on cable modem. Where as my old computer on dial up never did such, but it has a lot less programs running on the desk top.

Try using your start up menu, and not using messenger, windows media player, Outlook etc from opening when you boot up the computer.

On my old one I never ran those programs have a 8GB HD, where this computer has 120-GBHD, but this one lacks the SDRAM only about half what I have on the other one.

So remove all the bagage from your startup and it should run fine.

My guess would be to...

...first try upgrading your browser. You know, the start button - lower left and go into Windows Update and download any upgrades if there are any. This is my guess what your problem is.

If there's no upgrades or if there are (and you still lock up). Then try going directly into Google (www.Google.com) and do your search again. If it still locks up, then you've isolated it to accessing Google (and it probably has nothing to do with taxi.net)

Let me know if the first step resolves your problem. And if not, whether or not you've isolated the problem via the second step.

Boy Bill, if you're referring to me - boy do I have you SNOWED! My computer skills are much like my taxidermy, I'm a certified HACKER!

I don't know John...

I can't imagine that accessing Google uses up that much RAM. But honestly, I'm not sure. But you did give me another idea. Perhaps Russ's Temporary internet files byte-size is set too low (internet options/settings)?

John 120 Gig Hard Drive!

This response submitted by marty on 07/20/2003. ( ) 12.251.91.132

What the heck you doin with all that space - are you a bookie or something on the side?

I've got a 20 Gig hard Drive, P3/800 mhz and only 128 Meg of Ram on my 3 year old Box here. And I run several different CAD applications on my machine. CAD software is probably much more "processor hogging" than what most "normal folks" are running - and 128 ram is fine. I'm not the neatest person and I've still only used up less than 10 Gig of my Hard drive in three years.

And another sidenote. Anytime you do buy a computer with a Lord Humongous Hard Drive on it, it takes your processor that much longer to search thru that hard drive vs. having a smaller one. You probably don't notice it as processors nowadays are lightening fast. But your machine would be even faster with a much smaller hard drive - especially once you start loading it up.

I didn't even know you could get a hard drive THAT BIG!

Upon further reasearch - you may have...

...some Spyware running on your box that may be causing the problem. I went into the Google FAQ's on their site and did some research. This is what I came up with.

You may want to check that there is no spyware running on your
machine. The Google Homepage is very small so it should not crash your
system. However, searching Google triggers some spyware and since the
spyware runs in a background and gets and sends data to multiple places. It may be what is taxing your system.

Here is an article from PC Magazine that discusses the matter and
suggests
remedies: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,978170,00.asp

I've got Adaware on my machine. I downloaded it for free thru Lavasoft. And the first time I used it, it removed a bunch of stuff I had no clue was running in the background. It's pretty slick software. I recommend giving it a try as I think it might resolve your problem...

I could not find any available Windows upgrades. I did try going to www.google.com and tried several searches and all were successful. John probably has a good point about the capability of my machine. It's 6 yrs old now with 32MB RAM. I checked the Internet options/settings and found it set at 50%. Not sure what it should be set at so I left it alone. I really appreciate the advice from all of you on this. It did give me a way to search the archives by using the google.com . Its lots quicker than going through each entry. By the comments that you have made, it appears I need to upgrade to a new computer to be able to keep up.. Thanks to all for the advice. Russ

Well, at least you've got a workaround Russ

This response submitted by marty on 07/21/2003. ( ) 12.251.91.132

32 meg is a bit weak, but I'm still not convinced that's your problem. Or should I say, I don't believe it's the crux of your problem.

If you've been accessing the internet for 6 years and you haven't cleaned off your machine with some Spyware software, then I still say that you've got Spyware application(s) running in the background that's eating up your RAM. Taxi.net and/or Google isn't causing it by itself, I'd bet on it. And the applications John spoke of alone don't need anywhere near 32 meg of Ram to launch.

I'll bet John had applications running in the background too that he wasn't aware of - sucking up his Ram on his previous machine. Btw John, your connection to the internet (whether cable or dial-up or wireless or whatever) wouldn't have anything to do with these issues either.

Again, 32 meg of RAM is pretty weak nowadays. And it may be time to upgrade becuase you are going to run into more problems as your machine gets older. But I still believe 32 meg should be more than sufficient to run your applications. Something's running in the background that's sucking up your space.

Virus software isn't enough these days. Read my latest post (above). There's a link to a PC magazine article that rates the various Spyware softwares. I highly recommend purchasing one of them and running it regularly.
