Ok, I have to admit I was caught in another forum asking for help. But I did not go in there blind. I have been doing some research on rebuilding my truck engine and how with todays computer controled engines let it make serious horsepower.
I ask for help and where to go to find my answers. So I have four manuals I will be ordering the first of Aug.03.
To show you beginners what I am talking about and how it compares to some of the questions you ask.
Cam, lift and duration. Which heads will work the best on a 5.8L Ford. What can be done to build more torque and horsepower, i.e. A stroker crank! What needs to be done with the fuel injection system. What compression can I run. HOw or where to have the Computer reprogramed.
Anyway I foound out its a lot easier to make big horsepower and big torque and be street legal (remember vehicles are built for the general public)
Years ago we put a cam in and high compression pistons, a 4 barrel or 2X4 barrel even a set of three dueces and made some good horsepower from our non compliance engines. These days you have to stay within guide lines.
So what I have found it that you can easily get 1 horsepower per cubic inch these days. (that was hard in the past) and so many more foot pounds of torque its almost scarey.
Oh I have the basic ideas on just what I can do and will do, but I still need to do more research before even starting. So this lead me to a site, where Cody saw my name and ask if I was the same John C. I admitted it and Cody told me where to go what books to buy, yes they cost the same as taxidermy manuals. I cannot afford all of them at once but just like you beginners I can buy two now and two in a couple weeks.
The books will give me a head start and serve as a reference guide on this project.
Thanks Cody for your help!

I'd start with replacing my stock computer chip (that's made for fuel economy) with a performance chip.
Secondly, an exhaust upgrade would be in order.
Last modification would be Nitrous (Boy, I've been wanting to do this in the Minivan for years! Always wanted to smoke a Vet with the wife's minivan)
Actually, TenBears sounds like the guy to talk to - he says a lot of "high tech gear head" words that I certainly don't understand!
Have fun John C. I've helped build a few engines. 90% of it you can't teach or tell someone how to do over a computer. But it's worth it when you get it done. Lots of reaserch, lol. Hope it works out ok. MichelleW
Beefy engines are just like classic cars. Many times it's cheaper to to get a balanced, blueprinted engine that somebody needs to get rid of in a crunch. Summit is definately the Breakthrough of manuals when it comes to engines though. I had a nice 72 chevelle until I went through my divorce. Would have given up 10 chevelles to get rid of that headache though.(LOL) Good luck and have fun! Don't be puttin any hide adhesive on your gaskets now. Peace- Jeff F.
Why dont you just take the engine apart, THEN ask someone online to explain the WHOLE process to you. If they dont give you all the details, you can always call them names! Then say how theres such a big secret out there, and the snobs wont take the time to educate them. No wait, thats taxidermy. I get mixed up...
Thats something for someone else to do! Just could not be without tranportation for a few eeks while I waited on answers. Oh wait I want it nowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! Besides Ken would have to delete those words I have learn from the beginners here. (Not all But you know who you are)
Oh by the way at the NTA I will be wearing a red shirt with a white diagonal stripe. At lest one day.
Sorry...unnable make it to the NTA...Can't find a Tee-Shirt with a Big Bullseye on the Front And Back...with crosshairs onnit.

lol why not get better truck? lol
and sometimes is good to stand on other side of the fence and look back in the feild when getting flustered!
john, thanks kindly for all the good imput you do for this forum!
and i do the auto for the day job , and taxidermy for hobby
so to read this made me smile, thanks
But seriouslly, you can click on summitracing.com and they will have any part you need and will get it to you quick. They also have a tech line with knowledgable people that can answer any questions you have.
Its the Speed Density emissions control on the truck thats the problem. Its different than MASS/MAF controled vehicles.
Jen, I like tinkering with things. I am a bit determined to make it work with cam, headers etc. I am a bit of a tight wad so to speak. New vehicles are fine, but I can tinker with mine for 1/4 the price. Plus dont have to make those monthly payments.
I have the Summit and Jegs catalogs. Will be switching to a MAF emmisions unit in the future to make the truck do what I want it to.
