What do the pro's use to clear coat their fish? What are the pro's and con's of different types of clear coats that are available?
Thank you very much,
Have a great day!

The absolute best for commercial work price vs. quality. For competition automotive clearcoat can't be beat!

Many of us use WASCO's Competition gloss.

Great Fish Gloss

Great Fish Gloss. It is a water based acrylic, that is high in solids, twice that of other glosses, so it gives the depth desired in fewer coats. Some glosses require 4-6 coats to achieve a deep finish, where Great Fish Gloss can receive the same results in 2 coats. It is air brush ready and requires no mixing or diluting. It dries in minutes, not hours, and achieves full cure in 12 hours or less, depending upon humidity and temp. It can also be used as a sealer for skin mounting fish, along with any thing else that needs sealed. For more info call Great Fish Gloss at 1-866-424-7834 or email us at the adress listed. Thanks, Gary.

Gary can you really...

...pump this stuff thru your airbrush with good results? Is it self-leveling (like Triple Thick)?

I can't imagine being able to lay down a nice even coat with an airbrush. And, I have no desire to use a paint gun. (This is why I use Triple Thick aerosol). But if it does an acceptable job (commercial taxidermy) then I might be giving you a ring in the future...

..this will go through your airbrush, if milk will. This is not a thick gloss. It is self leveling, and cleans up with water. You must clean your airbrush immediately though, or you will have a layer of plastic (acrylic) in your gun. That is what this gloss is...acrylic in a water based emulsion. Acrylic is plastic. We use a gloss gun because we do a lot of fish. It is much easier to control than a spray can, so you can get a good even coat. Within minutes after a flash coat, you can apply a heavier coat that leaves a true, even layer. It dries faster than any other water based gloss, because of the amount of solids that can be used in this type of emulsion. It really does more than acceptable job for commercial work.
