red stag

Submitted by crosshair on 08/16/2003. ( ) 64.12.96.231

I have a red stag to mount, Ive searched the archives but cant find an answer. Ive taken measurements from skull to horn and etc, but when I set the horns on the form to these measurements--the form wont be able to hang on the wall because the horns will hit before the hanger reaches the nail to hang on. Its on a research straight form. what did I do wrong? Or should I tilt them forward enough to clear the wall and just go with it? Thanks for any help

just cut and tip down the head , be sure to support it with a board inside after doing it or a LARGE threaded rod. it will give you the clearance and a great aggresive look...DON"T tip the horns forward. that it clearly an amature move.....It will be noticed...

Crosshair;
Extend the form from the back. Trace the pattern of the form, then cut out a piece of 1/4" plywood to fit. Cut 1x1's to the length you need to extend the form. When you have the length you need, fill with foam then rasp down to match.

Don't......

....Tip the head down. You didn't specify how much room you need. Or how closely the cape fits the form. That information would help in determining how to approch the fix. I never use upright on elk for that same reason and red deer being a close relation.....I think I would look at getting a different form.

If you need more than 3", I would extend the form like Coyote suggested. Provided it is not more than you cape can handle.

Or, call Research and see if they have a sneak or semi sneak elk that is close in measurements and use the neck and shoulders with your red deer head. Sometimes you "gotta do what you gotta do" to make things go.
