Airbrush Advice!

Submitted by Katie Clark on 08/31/2003. ( ) 64.28.61.67

I have an old wolf rug that needed some patching, and so I bought some pieces of belly fur and a new tail to fix the rug up. Well, I thought that the fur was the right color, but it is much whiter than my wolf. So I am wondering if I could use an airbrush to blend the sections together. Would this look nice, or should I just find some different fur to complete my wolf? Please help!

You can spray dyes with airbrush

I know taxidermists that spray for example black dye on some balder areas of a black bear rug to blend in

Airbrushing fur

Katie, Often when replacing parts the match is not perfect. I have used an airbrush with good results on similar projects. On close inspection it's usually detectable as the paints don't have the sheen of the hair but if you don't overdue it you can make the matchup a lot better. I would tone down the brighter part and brighten up the duller part- do this sparingly and if it starts to look painted it's too much. Try "spotting" the attatchment area. When we look at things we tend to "average" the colors and textures we see. When you paint hair do just enough to fool the eye and people who do not know the tail has been replaced will not notice anything has been changed. Enjoy, Aaron H.
