Re-pickle hog hide?

Submitted by chris on 09/19/2003. ( ) 64.12.96.231

I have a very large domestic hog to mount 846lbs when butchered.the skin at the shoulders was very thick and during fleshing i could only get to about 3/4 of an inch from the hair butts. thought at the time i would be cutting this off as extra but might end up needing some. I salted the hide and pickled in saftee acid mix for 4 days. when shaving there was some pink material at the thick skin area. after shaving this off should i put the hide back in the pickle for a couple of days?

You should always repickle the hide after the first shaving. ITs covered very well in the archieves. The shin will be about 1/4 inch thick on the back and shoulders when tanned.
