Last season i did two deer heads using kits with surprisingly good results for my first outing. Going to try again this season and also have friends interested in me doing their heads. My question is do supplies such as salt, acid, mache, clay and adhesives have to be bought from taxidermy suppliers or can they be bought locally? For instance could modeling or craft clay be used instead? Also because of what I've read here am going to try liqua-tan instead of dry preserve. Thanks for the help!

You can buy most stuff locally, no matter pretty much where you live, it's just that, especially for me, to just buy from a taxidermy magazine, since your ordering your form, eyes, ears, etc.. anyway, and the prices are relatively the same. For salt, it's probably cheaper to buy from an elevator, just cause of shipping and stuff, acid i would recomend safetee acid, and not anything you can purchase locally, but you can read on how to make adhesives your self and you can get critter clay and apoxie locally from any craft store, but it's up to you, and when you mount mammals it's not a very good idea to use dry preservitive on anything bigger than a mink or animals of that size, so go with a good tanning agent, it's up to you but i have gotten really good results lutan-f, never tried liqua-tan, but i've been doing taxidermy for like 8 months so yeah, new at it to, but i hope i can help you some what. Have fun! cause it is fun.
Try calling a local taxidermist . Maybe he has some extra stuff you could buy from him . I know I help a lot of people out this way . Rick
You'll need to buy some of your stuff from a supplier like acid & mache & epoxie.Sure there Is a lot of stuff that can be bought locally you'll save a bundle on expensive S&H charges
