Traveling while preserving

Submitted by Daniel on 09/30/2003. ( ) 64.12.96.231

I preserve my squirrel hides for mounting using Borax. If I kill the squirrel, take its measurements and then skin it, I do not have to waste any meat. However, how am I to preserve the skin from the time it takes to receive the mannikin in the mail? Can I salt the skins to set the hair just as I would a whitetail cape and then relax them before using borax on the mount?

I have been simply freezing the squirrel whole and not skinning it until it is time to mount, but by doing this, the meat is ruined by having the organs still inside for such a long time.

Any suggestions or other possibilities?

Thanks,
Daniel

Freeze it

After you get it skinned out, put a moist paper toel inside the skin to keep it from drying out. Bag the skin up and freeze it.
