How to get a flat beaver

Submitted by Annie on 09/05/2003. ( ) 69.60.225.173

Hi i just finished tanning my first beaver and was wondering how to get the pelt to stay flat, it keeps bulging where natural bulges used to be, as in the back, mostly. For the moment, i have books stacked on top of the pelt, but if anyone has a better idea please help, as this does not seem to be doing much good. BTW it's a full pelt and has not been trimmed, it's head to tail(no tail)and slit down the belly,I don't know if this makes a difference or not.
Thank you in advance
Annie

Get a hoop

The only way for it to lay flat is to stretch it out on a hoop. Remove the legs and sew the holes up, cut the tail off, and then stitch it on to the hoop.

Annie Try a Rugging it on a sheet of plywood It's easier than tring to find a hoop. All you do is rehydrate the skin, strech the hide and staple it to the plywood as you go. Let it Dry for about a week, take it off the board and trim the edges.

Good Luck

Exactly how do i go about rehydrating a hide? And will this get rid of the folds in the middle cause i cant seem to be able to strech it enough to get rid of those.
Thanks
