Does anyone else have a HUGE hike on the lumber prices in thier state? Here in Wisconsin I went to by some wood, 10-2x4's 5 sheets 1/2" CDX, and was charged almost $150.00. 1 sheet of CDX 1/2" "house sheathing" was about 21.00. This is almost a 300% increse at the cheapest lumber yard around.
They said it was because of the rebuilding efforts over seas. Checked with a few more local yards and prices were the same. These price hikes from gas to wood are getting ridculious. I suport the war and doing what we have to do but come on now!

Yep I get the same excuse you get for higher lumber yard prices.
Thats total bull crap! We as consumers know it, but how do we combat it?
Has nothing at all to do with the war. Has everything to do with the devalued dollar in our neighbor to the north. Most CHEAP plywood and studs have traditionally come from Canada either as raw materials or finished products. The devaluation of the dollar means that the Canadians were losing profit margins and had to increase their prices. Due to exchange rates, it took more dollars to equal the same amount to Canadians. It's capitalism as its very best. Get over it. Everyone lives downstream. All except taxidermists who still think charging less is better for business.
I have the same thing here in NY State. I am just putting the finnishing touches on my new shop and my budget went way over because of the price of lumber going up. Good news though siding went down.
Because They CAN! Plain and simple.
Up North.......Our 1/2" cdx plywood is only $7.50 a sheet here and thats at a small hometown lumber yard, I am sure the bigger lumber yards a a little cheaper than that!
1/4" waverboard is now 18.00 a sheet in Cody Wyoming. I was told it was because of the rebuilding of Iraq and that a big lumber manufacture plant in Oregon went bankrupt so the supply is low nationwide. I took a client to a small sandwitch shop for lunch of hamburgers and tea yesterday and the bill was 17.00 with-out the tip. Why or how any taxidermist can justify the same 1970 or 80's prices on mounts is a mistery to me. Please tell me so I understand. Retirerment pay or does your spouse works full time so you can fail but stay in business?
I guesss you guys have never heard of the soft wood lumber tariff where US is charging huge tariffs on Canadian soft wood lumber. It has caused thousands of lost jobs in BC and Alberta. Oh it supposed to be in negotiations, but this would be the third year at least. So in the meantime, we starve and you have to pay more for your lumber which is coming from the US instead of Canada. Don't you love politics?
Those prices are changing daily, right under our noses. Check out drywall as well as dimensional lumber. Its all due to the rebuilding effort, plus some also speculate that the hurricane season will add to this. If I were building right now, Id look into saw mills and full cut dimensional lumber. Hmmm, is it dimensional or demensional? I hate when I cant spell.
BRENT....If you want to do a favor for your local yard post the name and loc of this place. A contractor I work with just bid and sealed a job with ruffly 20,000.00 in materials, with most building materials at a 300% increase, that's a huge cost to absorb. I'm sure he would gladly travel or pay to ship the materials for this job!
I'm working on a large remodeling project and my "lumber budget" has gone from 12k to 20k since I started drawing the plans! Call it the rebuilding overseas or whatever you want. I like to think it's just a bit simpler than all that.... What parts of the US economy are doing well? Yep, Home building and remodeling. It's about the only thing that's carried us through the last couple of years. Falling interest rates = more refi's, home improvement, and new homes. Supply and demand is right but I think these inflated prices reflect the demand right here at home; in one of the only industry where there's any demand at all! We'll see worse before we see better!
I work part time at the home depot in western pa and the 7/16 osb is 14.49 a sheet , big reason for the jump is the gov sent around 7,000 sheets over seas from what i've heard from our suppliers.the prices are just gonna keep going up for awhile.
I am a contractor in wisconsin. 7/16 osb went in 30 day's from $7.89 to 18.49 average cost on next 3 project's went up $8000.00 per job Who need's
a profit anyway. This crap is a joke, but it happens all the time.If your in the business you learn to live with it.
OK, can I drive to Ontario north of the Minnesota boarder and get reasonable priced building materials? I'm building a 26X42 garage and need all the stuff and have a truck and trailer in St Paul.
