Bear Tanning Question

Submitted by Jim on 10/21/2003. ( ) 204.211.171.11

I am fairly new to taxidermy and have a question about a bear that a friend of mine killed. He wants to get the bear tanned, but does not want it mounted or made into a rug. I know that the skin needs to be professionally tanned. What kind of tan should I ask for? What about the head...should I cut it off or leave it attached. I'm not sure how he plans on displaying this bear. Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

If you tan the head

you are going to have to turn out the ears, split the lips and nostrils and eyelids and flesh off all of the thicker meat on the head. You should get it dry tanned, The Wildlife Gallery in Blanchard, MI does a nice job tanning. The hide needs to be scraped -fleshed of all of the fat, and double salted until 75% dry. If this sounds Greek to you, use the orange search on the left for more details.
