I have some very very fat, fall skunks im working on and , my grief is there is so much fat, when im trying to remove i have managed to cut many a hole in the skin, ,,, got the fat thinned as much as i could,,, is it ok to pickle with fat still on them?
have salt dried one of them so far, with a layer of fat on it, the rest are in the freezer till i figure out how to deal with this dilemma
2nd question, are bear like this? i mean major fat layer at the skin? just wondering, haven't got to experience one yet.

Nine times out of ten that fat layer will not let the salt penetrate through the entire skin . As a result of that you could have some slippage problems later . Sometimes its better to rough flesh, salt, then flesh again totally, salt again until hard. Any secondly, yes bear are like that times 10 !

Plan on spending a half to a full day on fleshing and turning a lifesize bear, lots of slippery fun.

I think you know the answer, but DREAD it too, lol. Yep, you HAVE to beam off that fat first, then salt and pickle. Youll get the hang of it soon enough.

thanks
