Airbrush Problems

Submitted by Ben on 10/21/2003. ( ) 68.208.157.16

I purchased a Paasche H airbrush for taxidermy use, but I am having some problems with the paint drying on the tip. It does fine until you stop for a second and then it won't spray anymore. I tried to paint a wood duck bill and it was next to impossible. As long as your spraying an broad area it's OK but for detail it impossible. By the way I am using polytranspar water based paint.

Are you using any? With water base paint it's not a good idea, it's essential.

I have the same problem from time to time. To fix this, I would recommend thinning your paint slightly if you have not already done so. Add some retarder...a few drops in the color cup. Turn your air pressue up just a bit. Try these and see if it improves.

thinning will speed drying.

Use the waterbase retarder some colors take more than others. Just keep trying with the retarder and you can figure it out. Be sure you have a moisture trap on your airline near as possible to the airbrush.

Tip Size?

If your H model is one from the paasche kits, it comes with a #1, # 3 and a #5 tip. The #1 tip is in it from the factory. Replace it with the #3. This has a larger opening and is less prone to clogging. The #3 will do anything you need.

Good Luck,

I have discovered That The best water based paint to use id Wildlife Color. I have tried them all And it seems to flow the best. Even with a #1 tip when doing fine detail I get smooth action from it.
