Biological museum mounts

Submitted by RD on 10/16/2003. ( ) 24.225.9.100

I teach a high school field biology class, and was thinking of having my students make biological mounts. The ones I have seen had no eyes, and appeared to be stuffed with cotton. I am looking for any websites that deal with this kind of mount. Some pictures would be helpful also. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

They're called study skins. There are volumes and treatises published on their proper making.
You may need to get a permit to collect non-game/non-fur species (all species besides game animals might be protected in your state).
Check before one of the parents of one of your students flips out and sues the district for soemthing like "vivisection" or something else left-field.

I used to teach Bio, and thought about study skins. Use safety precautions if it will involve students to protect them from animal diseases and be sure what you are collecting is legal, as mentioned. You may also what to run this idea by the adnimistration for approval just to cover your arse. You may even want to get parental permission slips, since they will most likely hear about it anyway. Good luck, sounds like a neat idea.
