Hair Slippage Problem

Submitted by Dave on 10/24/2003. ( ) 205.188.209.106

I have recently taken in a Bobcat that the owner skinned and 'dry-tanned' himself (I think). It almost looks like he tumbled the cat in some corn grind or something, but anyway, I went to pick it up today and a big chunk of hair came off of the neck area. What caused this already? What should I do to avoid anymore before I can get to it, and will salt tanning be enough or should I pickle the whole thing again? Thanks for your help.

Give it back

There are many factors that could have caused the hair to slip. As is always the case. Myself, I wouldn't screw with it. It's not worth the time and energy to work with something that's that iffy to begin with.

Taking the skin in after it is showing damage....

may leave you customer to belive you can "fix" it and when it turns out to be crap, which it will, he will want YOU to replace it. It is alwasy better to let the job go when there is problems. If he did a tan of some sort, then let him suffer with what he did.
I alwasy check skins when they come into the shop by a simple pull test on the fur in select places. If any hair come out, I show the customer and tell them it is at "Their Risk" at that momment.
