Anyone had any experience with a hair on boar hide rug? can you get it thin enough without ruining the hair butts and having it fall out?Don't know why the guy would even want it but he does.

ws, I did one a couple years ago. I had it tanned commercialy and it was about as stiff as you might expect. Not real soft. I would be afraid of hair slippage if thinned too much. It turned out fine but I personaly think a shoulder mount is a much better use of a hog hide. -Aaron H.
You should be able to thin the skin down enough to soften it for a rug alright. I have done many of these pig skin rugs and the pig skin actually tans pretty soft anyway. Make sure you use a good tanning oil and break it at the right time and you wil be fine. I like to streach the hide upside down on a flat board and scrape it while it is drying. This allows me to match up loose ends in the pit areas, and also lets me streach the hide evenly to a more presentable shape.
The pig skin rugs look pretty good I think. just another way to offer up the customers trophy.
