I was wondering if it is necessary to always paint the eyes on deer the deer that i have just mounted a couple days ago looks really good i know that after drying takes place it may change. I used a nose and eye oil to slow down drying time. What suggestions do you have? Also how is the best way to remove the stink gland on skunks, I'm looking to mount a skunk for my next project when i can get one. Thanks for your help!

on the carpet in the living room and make sure you use the biggest knife in the kitchen and just skin it normally like you would a coon. Orange search button may have a different way but that works for me
Ed, I think the best paint jobs are those that don't look painted. On deer that hold good color a thin wash of paints will not change the look much but will be more lasting. After some time the natural color will fade so the watered down paint just makes it loger-lived. If this is your own mount you can always add to it later or redo it as needed. Check in the "search" section to find many opinions on finishing eyes. As for that skunk, I would skin the critter out cutting around the gland and discard the gland with the carcase. If the pose shows that area rebuild it. Now, I've skinned out the whole thing but never will again. My favorite skunk pose is with the tail down and trailing with the front feet up on something so the gland area does not show anyway. Oh yea, I would do it someplace other than the living room. Enjoy, Aaron H.
ovey now that gland, becarefull! as my eyes were watering terrible the other day! lol,,, but if you use a scaple with a scary sharp blade and go very slow, you can get a complete skin with it ,lol
