I bought a product to put in my pickels that was supposed to "set hair" It didden't work. ph is 1.8 and im using oxalic acid, and put a capful of concentrated lysol in. before I pickel i fleash and turn a hide, salt it, and scrape and re-salt it the next day. then I put it in the pickel for 4 days. I monitor the ph and stir the pickel twice a day. I tan with liquatan. I feel my problem is in the pickel, but here's my info. Please help me!

Just did a post two days ago. LYSOL has a VERY HIGH pH OVER 9.
With a low pH you dont need any bacteriacide
Are you salting the capes where the fluids can drain off the hides, on a slanted board?
I feel your problem is either with your additive or the LYSOL.
I dont use either and either a formic acid or WASCO ACID CRYSTALS and never have any problems.
If your PH is below a 2.0 - Bacteria cant live! So why add Bacteriacide? Lysol's high PH only serves to drive up the PH - otherwise its an ineffective product.
Also - you didnt mention drying the skin after the 2nd salting. Why not? That's the purpose of salting it - to accelerate the drying and leach out the fluids! Drying it is the only way to tighten the fur roots. Dry it completely! Then you rehydrate it prior to pickling.
Salting these skins without washing off the blood
and is your drying area humid ?
bacteria can grow on skins which are filthy and have blood on the hair, I always wash my skins and dry before salting, that would be the right time to use a bactericide. not in the solution which is going to be with a Ph below 3.
Thanks guys, By the way the additive was Tannit VGS by Van Dykes. I dont see as to how this product could do anything but help my situation, but maybe you guys know something I dont.I wasnt aware of the fact that you should completely dry the cape the second time around. long as Im at it whats the best rehydrating soulution? And any thoughts on the tannit vgs?
