Fixing Cut in Deer Chin

Submitted by Jim on 10/27/2003. ( ) 204.211.171.11

I got a cape from another taxidermist that has a 2" cut in the neck area (I think I can probably fix this easily). It also has a cut about 1.5" long under the chin. I am looking for suggestions on how to fix this as the hair is very short in this area. Thanks for the help.

Cuts in the face

Usually gluing cuts in the face and under the chin is my way to go. If you sew it the stitching would probably show and you would have to do finish work on it. I had great success using a good strong glue like either superglue or Epo-Grip on cuts like that. Just make sure you don't get it on the hair. Glue one side first and then pull the other side up and glue it. Should be invisible if done right. And it won't break open while drying either. I fix cuts in the brisket area like that as well.

small needle small thread

I use a small needle and quilting thread, trin with a scalpel, to remove any cut hair, use a football shape, then sew it up. As the mount dries, take a tack hammer and flaten the seam.
