Enjoy reading everyones posts daily and thought I would ask a question that always seems to puzzle me when I am shaving a deer face. In particular the bottom jaw area, and the real meaty area around the nose. On the bottom jaw if the long whisker roots are cut have i gone to far? Do the thick meaty area around the sides of the nose need to be shaved to the same thickness as the rest of the cape for best results?
Thanks for the help and different ideas that I have gathered off this site!

I only use a scalpal when I get to fleashing the muzzel of a deer. around the nose gets fleashed as thin as the lips, if not you wont have mush of a nostril on the finnished product. On the bottom jaw I fleash to the base of the wiskers, and get as much meat as possible off without cutting the wiskers. A good mount has a lot of wiskers!, and eye brows above and below the eye! Be careful in thease ereas as well. Just get as much meat off as you can without cutting thru the base of the hairs. Do a good job salting, and use a good tan.
Deer just like people have different features. Just like my horses some have a lot of wiskers some don't. some have fur and other have long hair.
If you cut the base of the whiskers, don't they then fall off? I use a scapel too, but I tend to be extra careful not to cut the base of the whisker. JOhn is right too. I have gotten some deer in that have a lot of nice long whiskers, and some that don't have any.
I said"to the base" not cut the base. I never(or at least try not to )cut any part of the follical. BUT you are both right. THANK you for humbling me. (I guess I just really like e'm whiskers!) lol. and GOD bless everyone who reads!
Thanks for the quick replies
