Polishing bear claws?

Submitted by Jesse on 11/20/2003. ( ) 24.34.19.244

I have a few bear claws that I would like to polish for jewelry. I have seen bear claws cleaned up real nice and I was curious how to get them that smooth and clean. What chemicals, tools and process do I need to get them in jewelry quality? Thanks for your help!

Plastic polishing rouge.

Sand with 1000 grit wet or dry sand paper. You may need to scrape them a bit with a single edged razor blade, light presssure perpendicular to the claw.

Wet sand with 1000 grit.

Apply the polish stick to the flannal wheel while its running at full speed. Just a little pressure with the rouge.

Very lightly buff the claw out. (NO HEAVY PRESSURE! YOU WILL BURN THE CLAW).

The polishing proccess will put a shine on the claws, or deer hooves and allow the lighter colored areas to shine. JUst as it starts to shine, stop dont go any further, you are done.

DONT CLEAR COAT! IT IS NOT NEEDED!
