I tried it once. Unfortunately, I lost the majority of my hair immediately after and have not tried it again? Seriously, there is a lot of good info on brain tanning, do a search or contact Bruce Rittle, he can probably help ya

Neat website! Check it out. Try it and make your decision. If all else fails, you've at least figured out how a deer thinks!(LOL) Jeff F.

Its alot of work trying to soften it up , the brain tan goes on pretty easy , but you have to keep working the hide as it dries , it takes quite a while to get the entire hide dried out. Then you have to break it over a cable or a table edge. It makes a flannel like leather that is water proof if you smoke it.

I would stick with more modern materials if I were you.Its about half as much work and the results are more consistant.

Braintan is unbeatable as a wearable "leather" Actually, it feels more like cloth.
And you can do it with no chemicals except the natural ones in woodsmoke.
For hair on hides, I like to pickle them and use brains for the dressing.
You can also use egg yolks if you don't have any brains! pardon the pun. there's a yolk in there somewhere.

thank you all
