Just wondering something, I'v been helping out a taxidermy out at nights and we got to talking, I thought about learning to do a few whitetail deer at my house for my friends and family,The taxidermy told me I could get into trouble if I didn't have the right paper work to do Taxidermy. My question is what do I need to do this (whitetail deer only) at my house without getting into trouble, All help appreciated, Brad , PS. I live in Texas

Oh I suppose a lot of people do some mounting deer heads under the table on a small scale..thats why you want cash Instead of checks eh?
If your under the table so you cannot be connected?

You need to know the terms.

Taxidermy: this is what we do when we work on animals.

Taxidermist: This is the man, woman or child that preforms the work.

All you need

is a tax number. I own and operate a studio in TX as well and you do not need a license in TX as you would in other states. Contact your local courthouse and tell them you need to register your business name and then get in touch with the State Comptroller in Austin and take it from there.
some other restriction may depend on where you live. Depending on how your housing area is zones you may not be allowed by city ordinance to operate a business out of your home in that area. Your best bet is to go to the courthouse and they'll set you straight.

Go get a tax ID. You can get one at your local comptrollers office. Go to the courthouse and get a DBA and your done. Shouldn't cost but $10 to get everything. Its much safer than "doing it under the table" and you won't get busted on taxes.

texas parks and wildlife cold storage book

This response submitted by tim on 11/24/2003. ( ) 64.12.96.137

you need to go to your local texas parks and wildlife office and ask them for a cold storage log book(free). its the log book that meat processors use when people bring deer to them to be processed. you have to log in their name ,date and what it is and give each one a different number. place the same number on the animal you have taken in to mount for whoever. if you dont then it puts you over the possession limit and you are asking for big trouble . your game warden wants to know who owns each deer you have taken in. he can look at the log book and then the number you have on the deer and he will know what belong to who.
a tax number would be a good idea to.

The cold storage book is not required as long as you keep the same info in your own books. I spoke with our game warden about this. I use the general taxidermy log book sold by Research. No license required here in TX. Follow the above advice & get a DBA & tax ID.
