willow limbs

I make my own with willow limbs. Bend limbs around, into a hoop, or cirle. Use leather or sinew to tie the ends together. If you can only get smaller limbs you can tie several together to make bigger hoops. I lace the beaver blankets to the hoop with leather shoe strings.

Hoop steamer

Bending those saplings can be a real pain. They crack and break at sharp angles and can make all your hard work look amateurish.

I made a steamer out of my propane turkey cooker by using and old tractor disk as a lid and taping (aluminum tape holds very well) to an aluminum flexible dryer vent to the hole in the center and then attaching it to about 12 feet of stove pipe propped up by some saw horses.

Put as many saplings as you can down the pipe and steam them for about a half hour. Put on some leather gloves, very hot, (wont make that mistake twice ,duh) and wrap them around a pre made jig and let them dry for a couple weeks.

Works great with ANY saplings, don't have much willow around here.

I do a few every year. E-mail me if I can help.

I have bought mine from beaverhoops.com . They have all different kinds, they are a little expesive, but if you want to save yourself the time I think its worth it.
