Pickling?

Submitted by WanB on 11/26/2003. ( ) 205.235.215.4

Another rookie question. I have used the orange search button and still cannot find what exactly pickling is. I see many people do it, but what is the actual product and what does it do? Thanks for you patience!

This is where the WASCO Breakthrough manuals really help the beginners.

The manuals give you in depth discriptions of what each porccess does for you and why.

A pickle is an acid based solution, that is used to prep the hide for tanning. What the acid does is soak into the hides and swells the cells by saturation (plumping the hide) this makes it a lot easier to shave (shave meaning thinning the hide from the flesh side) once you have shaved the hide, you look for pink spots on the hide, this means the PICKLE has not saturated the hide in that spot. At this point you return the hide to the pickle until the pink is gone.

You can final shave the hide at this time, removing every last bit of red meat(its now colored gray), you can do final facial fleshing too.

Neurtrailze the pickled hide and head to tanning.

Bruce has explained the pickle in much more detail in the forums. Its all archieved.
