John C on 12-13-03 you helped a person ,message title was my first mount. You replyed back to them with title steps in squence . I have a ? for you on that, after the pickle, rinse ,neutralizing , you said tan with lutan-f and then use the syn-oil on cape. The kit from cabelas came from Van Dykes it dont come with any kind of tan just syn-tan . The 2 hour tape and the written instrutions goes from pickle, rinse ,neutralize, rinse, rub in syn-tan. My ? is can you skip the lutan-f and go straight to the syn tan. they say to just rub it in and let it soak it up a few hours.IF you can do it this way will the cape be ok to hang up for a week or so or should i get it on the form as soon as posible . If any one else can help please do .THANKS DP

I would leave it in the pickle or remove from the pickle and freeze.
Usually when a manufacter has steps to do their proccess stick as closely as you can.
Be carefull when neutralizing and dont over neutralize.
I would think that after the tan has soaked a few hours, it would be safe to freeze but dont roll it into a ball. Its better for the hide to be rolled in a long roll, this lets the hide freeze faster and thaw faster. Less chance of problems.
Do's that help you?
I have one to tell you i found out about this site after i bought the kit and learned how much the kit is leaving untold and unexplained. It is advertized as having everything you need to do your w/t. My point is if i found this forum first my deer would be done . THANKS FOR YOUR HELP
So you would freeze it after neutralizing and then thaw it out and then rub in syn tan when you are ready to mount it. and skip the lutan f all togeather.
The directions with Van Dykes kit are very unclear for a beginer. After you neutralize let drain until it's just damp rub on your syn-tan and freeze.
When I used this kit on my first deer I let the tan sit for 12 hrs then I mounted it right away. It's been over a year and no problems.
I think what is confusing you is. John said rub with syn-oil after lutan. Syn-tan is the tanning agent in the Van Dykes process, Note Syn-Tan Is NOT syn-oil. Two different products.
