This does not concern new puppy. How do I wash out alum tan? So I can tan with a synthetic tan from McKenzie. And what is the best for tanning skins? I want something that ends up soft and pliable.

Although it can be washed out using a couple of baths - using Hot tap Water and a detergent - instead - simply re-tan it. Rehydrate it first using warm water and Dawn - then put it inot a pickle, neutralize and re-tan it.
I'd recommend using our Rittel's EZ-100 to retan it. It's an excellent all-around tanning agent for Weasels to Bison - and it tans to the original size of the skin. You'll get a white leather, thats soft and stretchy - and once tanned - the skin is washable in warm water and a mild detergent! It wont wash out like Alum!
McKenzie, WASCO and Van Dykes all carry our EZ-100 tanning agent!
