How do I soften a tanned deer hide with hair on?

Submitted by Terri on 12/21/2003. ( tsw9569@cs.com ) 205.188.209.106

A friend shot and gave me a 13 point buck. I never tanned a hide before, but thought it would be a shame to throw away such a large pelt.

I washed the hide, put it in a salt bath, rinsed it, and applied Trapper's Hide Tanning Formula. It dried out and now is stiff as a board. Someone suggested to put lanolin on it, so I did. I tried to rub the lanolin in and even used a wire wheel to try to get the lanolin to penetrate the hide. Now it is a stiff gooey hide. Do I throw away the hide or is there something I can do to save it?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Soak it

You need to soak it in water with Rittels bacteriazide and work it from there,it probably needs to be thin down also.
Sounds like you had no instructions before you started.

Click on Rittels
