Whitetail nose flocking

Submitted by Thomas on 12/28/2003. ( ) 67.74.248.124

One taxidermist that I talked to said that he uses flocking inside of the whitetail nostrils that he mounts & I just wandered if anyone else uses this method & if so what steps do you take in doing so?

Thanks!

Joe Coombs demonstrated this

at the 1999 World Championships. Here's the technique: mix up a small amount of Apoxie Sculpt (or apoxie of choice). Mix in a pinch of red flock. Blend together. Apply to interior of nostrils. Blend into where the hair meets. Water works well, Safety Solvent works better. That's it. No painting necessary.

Hope this helps.

I meant water works well to blend it, but Safety Solvent is what he used, and works better.

Sounds great

I am going to try this method out for myself.I could be wrong But I think what the taxidermist was telling me was useing flocking as nostril hair.
PS: what exactly is solvent - laquer thinner?

Thanks for all the great info!

Safety Solvent is a solvent that is as its name implies, a solvent that is much, much safer to use that the usual paint thinners, etc. I don't know what the ingredients are, though.
