how does stop slip work after the mounting process? i have mounted only two deer but both of them started to slip after i was finished. i am sure the reason for this is me being slow. just reading about this and looks like a great idea. thank for any help

How long after you finished did they start slipping?

Put a fan on them when you are done with the mounting. Rotate them upside down. Liquids seek the lowest level, this will help the drying.

Rotate head up the next day, keeping fan on the deerhead.

When you use DP, you do EVERYTHING right when you mount it. You aren't seeing "slippage", you're seeing hair fall out. STOP MESSING WITH IT. It will take 5 to 7 days for the mount to dry and the hair lock in. You can lightly adjust eyes, ear butts and small touchups, but keep away from the hair. IT WILL FALL OUT. That's just DP and you can't change that.

Lysol didn't do it

Lysol kills bacteria which is the major cause of hair slippage. It doesn't cause hair to fall out.I use lysol concentrate in all of my wash and rehydrate solutions, and have never had any problem.I agree with George.

Rob yes it cause hair slippage, check the pH

This response submitted by JOhn C on 12/30/2003. ( ) 66.233.157.155

Lysol nolonger contains carbolic acid, it did have a low pH until the carbolic acid was removed some years back. Check the pH and you will see its pushing 11, yes it will kill bacteria but will slip the hair! Been there done that!

How much do you use?

This response submitted by Rob on 12/31/2003. ( ) 216.96.110.68

You're not supposed to soak the hide in it! Just use a capful to your soak solution WILL NOT cause hair slippage! Been there, still do that!

DP/Stop Slip/Soaps

For what it is worth, I've never tried DP myself but what I've gleaned from all the talk is that DP works well for thinner skinned critters, say up to fox size. Having said that, it would seem in order to be successfull w/DP on deer heads you need to thin that cape very well, the thinner the better. I would expect also that you need to be very efficient/proficient with the entire process. In other words do the entire process in one day. Green cape to finished (drying mount) same day. Takes at least 30 days to dry/cure, then go ahead and brush it.
I've used Stop/Slip on drying mounts (liqua-tanned) occaisionally. Just spray loose areas w/pump bottle. Not sure if it really helped, hair always seems to set up good once dry even if some hairs are a little loose. Don't think it will fix/stop slipping which is different from loose. Product name a little misleading. Slipping is patches of hair falling out, things usually only get worse from there.
As for Lysol, the biggest concern w/ over the counter products today is that everything is pH balanced, which puts everything somewhere @ pH 7.0 and up. I just tried Kemal-4 the other night as a cape wash/degreaser/cleaner/tan prep all in one. This stuff is concentrated, one ounce to 5 gal H2O. Seemed to do a good job of at least cleaning the cape.

thanks

thanks for all the help. i think i may have had the wrong idea about slipping. i had no large areas of hair falling out just some loose hair but this sounds like it maybe normal.
