Red squirrel

I am new to taxidermy and am getting ready to mount a Red Squirrel, I was told you can flesh the squirrel and spread borax on the inside of the hide and not have to tan it. wouldn't that start to smell?
I would like to do it this way just to see how it turns out, would it be worth it though? any info or new ideas would be helpful.

I still do it that way with that size animal and I have been doing it for over 40 years.
