PVC Fleshing beam

Submitted by Christina on 12/26/2003. ( iluvnails@aol.com ) 64.12.96.231

Hope you all had a great holiday!

I am heading to Home Depot (with my Christmas gift certificate!) to purchase an 8" PVC pipe for a fleshing beam. I have looked through the archives to get a better idea of how people are using them, but havent really gotten a good idea of exactly how I am going to do this. Do you mount them onto a board? Do you just lean them on your shoulder? Someone said that they mount it to a 2x4 for support--does the 2x4 run the whole length of the pipe?

I gather that I need to get some vice grips to hold the hides onto the pipe--and I need to sand the pipe to give it some grip. Any other suggestions?

Anyone willing to share a picture of what theirs looks like? Thanks so much, as always!

Christina :)

Run the 2X4 they whole length

It will add stability. I bolt the 2x4 to the bench. then use drywall screws to secure the pipe to the 2x4. Depending on the size of deer in your area you may want you get an additional smaller one. Of course this is dependent on if you Y cut your deer capes.

I'll e-mail you a picture

Hi Christina
I have learned a lot from the good people on this site and was looking forward to being able to help someone else. It's pretty easy to make and works well. A picture is worth a thousand words.

PVC fleshing beams

You might take a look at braintan.com. They are discussed there pretty well.
Mine is mounted at waist level, parrelel to the floor. I used a couple 2X4's lag bolted into the pipe. I use a four inch pvc, with about two feet extended beyond the supports. This works good for smaller hides. I also have a piece of 10 inch that I can put over the end, and work larger hides easily. Works for me.
