how long does it take to tumble a hide for a reasonably soft leather?

i know that you have to have at least an eight foot drum with 100lbs of sawdust. i have a four foot tumbler and no matter how long i tumble it will not soften.

oh goodness! Yes, this is professional tumbler, a taxidermist I just met, gave me permission to use it, I figured I would dry the hide down to the point that I could strech it and the skin side would pull white then proceed with tumbling, yet I thought still would take a good 24 hours or so on a 8 x10 tumbler to dry down?
Forgive my ignorance, but this is exciting!
ps yes i know about hardwood sawdust.
