Hi
A friend gave me a nice eight point whitetail rack that was mounted on a wooden plaque to use on one of my first couple practice shoulder mounts. When I removed the antlers from the plaque, I realized that there was no antler plate connecting the two halves. There is enough bone attached to each antler to get screws in but I will have to make an antler plate with Bondo. I have read TONS of posts about Bondo in the archieves, but am not sure if to just use regular Bondo or mix it with fiberglass resin or mix and add chopped fiberglass...etc.
Can someone please offer some advice? I thank you in advance.

Either way would work. The fiberglass will just make it that much stronger
use chopped fiberglass, this will alow you to work with the bondo easier because it won't be running off the skull plate on the form.
I personally use chopped excelsior when filling the skull cap but fiberglass chop would work well.

Cut some hair from the rear edge of the cape from the back of the animal. Mix this with the bondo more like putty and less like molasses. You can cut off 1/4" lengths of hair from the tail if you have it.
They make little bracket-like things which are marketed for the mounting of shed antlers...never used them myself (never done a deer myself) but just thought i would add this in. maybe someone else knows what im talking about? Good luck

I think I will make a skull plate out of a piece of plywood. I'll screw each antler (which will have to be shimmed up and I'll have to guess at the spread and angle)to the plywood and fill in a skull plate with Bondo. I have been playing around with Bondo the past few nights and it doesn't seem to bond all that well to wood. I appreciate the advice and think it'll work.
