Hair slippage.....auto tanner

Submitted by Lisa Lee on 02/18/2004 at 16:41. ( ) 66.139.182.225

I am using the auto tanner with the crystals provided but with Rittles pro oil plus. using a mixture of 1 gallon to 1 # crystals tanning 1 cape @ a time overnight. After all prep and shaving putting in tanner with solution abouve and 1/4 cup of oil and tanning overnight. I feel like I am having a little hair slippage I have two spot that are on the body of the hide near the top of the mount, however I also had to pull and streatch the cape while I was dry fitting the form and this is when I had few big clumps of hair come out, but only in a couple of spots. Do I go ahead and mount it? I can cover up the spots when brushing and grooming hide.

Also can I leave the cape in the tanning crystal/oil solution for a 3 or 4days before I mount it or should I refreeze it?

Ichecked archives and found a liitle help but I need more info.

Thanks for any help you can provide....

lisa you can leave it in over night after you have put it back in for the last time, actually you can leave it in for up to a month, or take it out, drain it, oil it, and freeze it or leave it in the fridge if you plan on mounting it in a day or two. i like to let it stay in the fridge at least over night so it can sweat. i use two gallons of water that is at least 107 degrees and two pounds of crystals when i tan and then after the first time in the tanner i take out and shave and then put back in the tanner for another hour with new solution, never had any hair slip at all, just my personal preference but i do not like too put the hide back in dirty solution. yes i do put oil in the tanner too but i use 3/4 of a cup, then when that is done, hang for 30 minutes and then tumble for 20 minutes, then put in fridge or freeze, mount later. any questions holler.

Thanks...anymore suggestions

Lisa, The only suggestion I have is to not add the oil to the machine. Do your tanning the swab the oil on after. In my opinion it does a better job of oiling than adding to the machine. Before I tan my hides if its an iffy type hide I will apply stop rot or preserve-it around the ears and eyes just for added precautions. You should not have any slippage while mounting. Most capes you should not be able to pull but just a couple of hairs out at a time.,God luck,Mark

I use 1 gallon per pound of crystals and 1/4 c of oil. I do a quick fleshing and turning of everything, remove the cartlidge, put in the tanner for an hour or two, take out, drip, flesh on machine (or wire wheel if you prefer........lol.........sorry couldn't resist)put back in tanner for 2 hours, drip, get measurements and freeze. I wouldn't leave it in any longer then you have to because you will get shrinkage. Overnight if you have to but I can't believe you can leave it in "a month" without mold. I would guess that if you are only pulling alittle hair out that it will set when dry.I also like to tan 2 at a time because I feel the hides don't roll as much.

Lisa,
I use 2 gals. of water at 120-130 degrees with one& one half lbs. of crystals for 2 hrs.,shave, return to tanner for 3hrs.Drain 1 hr.&oil.
If the cape is iffy, add one half oz.PREZERVES IT after 3 hour cycle&run in tanning solution for one half hr. Quick rinse in water drain and oil.
I also thaw all capes in ULTRA SOFT solution. works for me.
p.s...don't taxi cape by tugging on hair.

Thanks to all

I will take all of what said and apply it. I think I'll start by removing cape for solution And shaving one more time then freezeing as I won't be able to work on it till Saturday maybe Sunday. Thanks again..!
