Asking local Taxidermist for help

Submitted by Rob on 02/18/2004 at 23:52. ( ) 12.218.226.29

I am new to Taxidermy and am ready to order my deer forms and was thinking about calling a local taxidermist in my area and asking to see if they would check it for me to make sure I measured the cape right.. Would they be willing to help me out. I would pay them if need be. The school in which I went to Taxidermy is over 2 hours away so I thought it would make more sense to ask someone closer if possible.. Thanks

I help numerous taxidermists in my area and can't beleive they have the balls to be so brazen at times to ask me the questions or ask me to show them the stuff they do. I'm a nice guy but am at the end of my rope, the boot prints on my back are starting to hurt and taking money out of my pocket. If you are only 2 hours from your school make the drive they would probably like to see you again and it's something you paid for. I agree with most on here that there are no secrets in taxidermy anymore, however the ones that I have learned have cost me a lot of money, and they weren't really secrets. Join your state assc. and you will learn more secrets than you could ever hope for. sorry for the sermon, but I spent more learning taxidermy than I did on a 4 year degree from Eastern Carolina Uni. )military did help me with that). while I'm on the subject and bitching about all the free info offered here how about a little common courtesy when a question is answered and say thanks (usually by someone that has a really cool business name wanting to know what kind of salt to use or some numb nutted thing like that). Not picking on anyone in particular but they usually have a name like "world's greatest lifelike memories" and asking dumbass questions,. Rob, please do not think this is in anyway directed at you, I'm just having a extremly bad day and I'll tell you why. A taxidermist opened a business a couple years ago in my area, got on TV, in the paper etc... had the big bold print ad in the yellow pages and took in a ton of work, some of which would have went to me, not that i need anymore. Now thias person is going through court proceedings for not doing the work. this taxidermist called me and asked if I could help, of course i did, i even called the customer and explained I would guarebtee the deer would be done before the court date, which I did. All I asked for in return was a ruffed grouse that I needed last week to have ready for our state show this coming week. Did this person come through with my bird ? Not only no but hell no! To sum this up I AM done entirely giving out free advice and being a nice guy in the future. Rob the only advice i'm going to give you is if these deer are for customers and need to know how to measure them you should not be mounting them, unless maybe they are for yourself or for friends that won't want to kick your ass when they get them back. Sincerly rob I'm trying to be truthful, not hurt your feelings, call me an asshol3 i don't care it's the TRUTH! and folks i do know we all need to start somewhere but practice!practice!practice! before screwing up a customers trophy.

Rob, use the search button to the left type in "measuring deer cape" the answer is there.
Just giving you a bad time about the school I'm guessing you didn't go to the school because it is 2 hours away, but if you did
go I'D ask for a refund pronto!

Good Luck
Gary

Local?

Where are you from? I would call the place you are ordering your forms from, have them send you a catalog and look at the page on how to measure. I can't believe you went to school for taxidermy and left there not knowing how to measure a cape or anything else you took classes for. John I must say I felt better reading what you had to say. Sadly enough those of us from the old school still say thanks ect. without a thought. It's pretty bad when you are in shock when you hear it now a days. Being a FF/EMT and asked how you can take it. My reply is, just hearing 1 good thing that you do makes up for the 10 negetives. Driving to fast/to slow, blah blah blah. Remember there are good people out there even though they take longer to find, in this day and age. You have to give Rob credit for asking in a nice way.

I did go to school and I do not bother driving the 2 hours back to the school. the only problem is that there is a class going on untill sometime in March and I do not want to wait that long if possible. I did measure the capes, but I just want to have them double checked. I do not want to end up buying 2-3 forms, find out which one fits the best and send the rest back. I just want to be sure.

I understand you went to school

what I don't understand is why you were not taught how to measure. I mean no disrespect. If you don't want to say where you live, then leave your e-mail address. Are the capes tubed or cut all the way down the back?

John,
For someone so done with spending his valuable time giving advice, you sure did waste a lot of it with that reply. Who gives a rat's ass about your personal woes? If you don't want to answer questions, what the hell are you doing on the forum?
Certainly some of you old cranks, jackasses, etc, have parents that tought you if you don't have anything nice (helpful) to say, don't say anything?
With jerks like you, this forum is a total waste of time. Standard replies? "Use the search", "Don't say thanks, say thank you", "don't use caps". One out of ten replies are from someone who is a decent person with enough people skills (how the hell do you stay in business with yours?) and is actually helpful. The rest of you think someone should bow down and kiss your feet. You're a friggin' joke John, but you're certainly not the only one on this forum.
