A panel is considered as the piece of "board" that a mount is attached to when you hang it on the wall (I don't use them unless requested and simply attach a hanger to the BACKBOARD of the mannikin. HOWEVER, if you use that same piece of board "panel" to mount a standing animal on, it now becomes a BASE. I mount many lifesized animals on panel BASES. It's just a descriptive word telling you how the "panel" is used.
that's what i understood when you explained me yesterday but when i saw amy call a base a panel, i was just lost you know !
so, why did you write on the last sentence a "panel base" couldn't you say a base merely ?
ans is panel an adjective too?
Generally speaking, a panel is the piece of wood the mount is actually attached to. It is usually a few inches wider than the mount itself, and often has enough space at the bottom to attach a nameplate, which is a piece of metal with engraving on it, stating, perhaps, the hunter's name, date of kill, etc. Most of the time, a panel is used with a shoulder (or head) mount of an animal. (To further confuse you, sometimes the panels are also called plaques.)
A base is most often used with a lifesize (or full body mount) of an animal. Unless the animal is mounted standing on all four feet, or maybe at least three, a base is necessary to attach it to, to keep it from falling over. Many times, a base will be made to look like the habitat the animal is found among.
Go to some of the taxidermy suppliers listed on this website and look at their catalogs. Type in "base" and "panel" in the search areas. That should give you a better understanding.
Hope this helps!

The fox you are referring to is known as a "Pedestal Mount." It is a shoulder mount, attached to a base, to be set on a table, shelf, desk, etc. Panels are used to hang on the wall. Generally.
Jasmine: The following is cut and pasted from Merriam-Webster's online dictionary. Hopefully it will help as I can see you've also entered into the proper English and grammatical use of these applications. A PANEL is a separate or distinct part of a surface;a thin usually rectangular board set in a frame (as in a door) (2) : a usually sunken or raised section of a surface set off by a margin (3) : a flat usually rectangular piece of construction material (as plywood or precast masonry) made to form part of a surface c : a vertical section of fabric.

Both can be as asthetically creative or as structurally simplistic as you desire. Whether the word is used correctly by all is another lesson in the educational background of those you converse with or even the part of the country one hails from. Pronunciation is just an example of how different individuals utilize different vocabulary.
