Are you a French student studying to become a taxidermist, or a French student studying to become a translator to a taxidermist who goes to France?!

What exactly is it you are doing, I am really very curious is all.

Why taxidermy?

hi leanna
i'm a french student studying to be a translator
this year I had to make a glossary of terms related to a subject i had to choose
it had to be a subject that had never been chosen by anyone
and it had to be a glossary taht never existed in shops
i first wanted to do it about the making of glass (just by interest) but it already existed
one day,I found the word "taxidermy" in a book and I told myself "that's it !"
first I did'nt really like it , for I had NO knowledge of it and i knew no one who was a tax
plus every tax I tried to meet here in france was not nice at all
but then I met some nice people and I visited some tax who really gave me the taste for it
*and here I am !
I enjoy it really
ill probably mount an animal just for the sake of it but I don't think I want to be a tax
anyway it is a nice experience !

Negative: An Adjective having the effect of saying No! Example: Not, Never, None.
Double Negatives should not be used. Example. I do Not Never thin My hides! I do not thin My hides. Would mean it is something that you do not do. I never thin my hides would also mean it is something you do not do. However it you do not never do something than The double negative would reverse the statement. the do Not would describe the never. Making them cancel out. Meaning you always thin your hides. Get it?

Eye Tuck: when mounting an animal there are Two methods of doing the eye the tuck is done by leaving the inner shin attached to the edge of the eyelid. This shin is tucked between the glass eye and a layer of clay that has been used to sculpt in the fleshy part of the lit. in the lay Method the inner skin is removed at the edge of the eye lid, and it is laid against the glass eye.

Jawsets, Are made of plastic. They are formed in a mold that has been sculpted to look like the jaw of the animal they are intended for.

Fleshing Is removing the Muscle tissue (meat) from the shin (Hide)

Defating is generally used in reference to birds. It is the same as fleshing, But usually with birds their is a layer of fat between the flesh, and skin.

Thinning, Is just what it says. You actually decrease the thickness of the shin (hide) by shaving it with a knife, or machine. This is bone to allow better penetration of the tanning chemicals, and allow the hide to relax better. and give better Stretch it also aids in keeping the hide from shrinking wild drying.

A relaxer, Is a relaxing agent. I would believe that both are used with the same frequency in conversation. However In the written word, such as on the computer. Relaxer seems to be used more often. Mainly because it saves the writer a bit of typing.

Time in the pickle depends on the thickness, and kind if hide being pickled. The minimum for a thin skinned specimen would be around 12 hours. However there seems to be no Maximum time. a shin (hide) can remain in a pickle bath Indefinitely as long as the pH is maintained around 2.0.

I hope this helps.

Negative

This response submitted by Old Fart on 03/23/2004 at 11:57. ( ) 64.122.57.77

The term "negative" is refering to the mold that you would be using to cast something, and the "positive" would be the cast. It can be used many times, depending on what the mold(negative) is made of. An algenate mold would be used once to create a positive that you could make a more perminant mold from. This would be for something like a fish head, where the original will not last long. To mold a rock, the original would serve as the positive to make the mold.

Eye tuck, is using the skin on the inside of the eyelid and tucking it between the glass eye and the clay built up around the eye to replace the tissue removed to prevent shrinkage on the finished mount. About 1/8"(3mm) is sufficient on a deer head.

Jaw sets are made of various types of plastics.

Shaving refers to thinning the skin. Fleshing is taking flesh and fat off the inside of the skin, this would be done before shaving.

Relaxing is wetting a dry skin to make it workable. This could be a salt dried skin or a tanned skin.

Thank you for explaining why you are asking the questions.

Jawsets

are also made from wax, though most are plastic. I've bought some from Noonkester (I believe) that were a rigid polymer material that reminded me of porcelain.

You may also use the animal's own jaws/teeth in a mount. The gums/interior of mouth have to be rebuilt, using an apoxie.

Recently, McKenzie Supply has offered complete mouth units, which include the jawsets and lips (and the nose?).
