Is there an in shop tanning method that will penetrate and do a good job on an elk hide that I have pickled and ran under a wire wheel? I have no fleshing machine and a tannery is not an option for me right now. If not I will probably have to try DP which I'm not thrilled about. Everything I have read in the archives says to use DP with good results you still need to shave the cape super thin.
Thanks, John

get cape as thin as you can - you can do it with the wheel and then dp and use Epo-Grip to hold the hide in place - you should have no problems
DP is useless at this point, while I would use aluminum sulphate 1 ounce per drained pound of hide.
I have use aluminum sulphate for almost thirty years and have not had problems of any kind with it.
Lutan-F is also a very good option.
DP is nothing more than a Desicant, a drying agent, I ts ok for small game, but thats as far as I would go with using it! DP leave edible materials in the hide.
Almost any TANNING AGENT would be fine, just follow the directions on the product you choose.
Email me and I can let you in on some info that may help you out.
I've found nothing in it that I didn't think would work well on an elk hide. It's quite simple now that you already have it pickled. You'd simply paint the tan on and let it set for a day. It DOES penetrate. Like John said, don't try to DP it now that you have it pickled. And if you want a true immersion tan, John's suggestion is just as valid.
what kind of wire wheel and will this do a good job instead of using a knife or scalpel-- maybe i could get less holes thanks for any info
