I have a coyote hide I intend to make into a rug.I am going to use the syn-tan method and my question is. Can I break the hide in a tumbler before I put the syn-tan on the hide and do I need a tumbler mix? Any help on this would be a great help. Greg

tumbler is big it will not break that way - i have used several ways to break yote hides - first as it is drying stretch the hide with your hands - where it stretches it will turn white - as it goes on a little further(dryer) pull across the edge of a dull piece of metal or run it under a wire wheel
Also you can use the tip of your fleshing board to break in too.
