Elephant Tusk Cleaning

I've inherited a pair of 60 lb. elephant tusks which are showing their age. What substance would be safe to clean and polish them? Also, one has developed a crack at the base that travels about 6 inches. What can I do to repair / restore without damaging?

To stop the cracks. Drill a small hole at the end.

I have done this before, Drill a small hole at the end of the crack. Then using Apoxie sculpt fill in the hole, but dont pack it tightly. Buff with a cotton flannel spiral sewn wheel in a drill and use plastic polish. This shine will last your lifetime and all you will ever need to do is dust them.
