pressure tanned cape

i just had a w/t cape tanned by a guy that uses a auto tanner. he oiled the cape when he was done. my ? is can i wash this cape in dawn to get the oil out of the hair? will this mess up the tan? thanks dave

Oil in hair

Dave, If there is oil in the hair of the cape it was not properly tumbled. I would not wash in dawn because you may wash too much of the oil out and possibly the tan. Your best bet would be to tuble the cape adding some mineral spirits to the sawdust. This will remove any oil residue out of the hair. If you do not have a tumbler you can wipe the skin with mineral spirits and rub some sawdust in the hair. let it set about 15-20 minutes and blow out with compressed air. This should take care of it for you. I use odorless spirits but regular works it just take a day or 2 for the smell to go away. Good luck, MarkV.

I have been using the auto tanner for years and after tanning and oiling I always do a quick wash in dawn before tumbling, haven't had any problems on 400+ capes.
