I have a whitetail head in the freezer. It has been there 3 1/2 years. Is it worth even trying to mount? Will it be better to get another cape?
Thanks for the help

Hi Jeff,
I just mounted a cape I had in the freezer for 2 1/2 years with no problem.
IF 1) you have the cape/head double wrapped in a thick plastic heavy garbage
bag, it should be okay. AND 2) if you handled the skin properly BEFORE
it went into the freezer I would think it would be okay. If those two things
have been done for the cape, you're ready to go.

Jeff , if the cape was rolled up with the head part inside , you should be okay . The only problem you would have is a little freezer burn . Now if the skin is still on the skull then forget it . The ears will be so dried out , you'll never be able to skin them . Give it a try . Rick
Jeff, where there's freezer burn, use a syringe and rehydrate under the skin even the ears. I've had to do a few the customer left in a freezer longer than they should have been (even on the head) and was able to do them. Granted they are more work but do-able.
If it is on the head, you may have to inject some water under the skin around the skull first to help get it off. Especially eyelid, antler base, & lip areas.
