Seam Help

Submitted by Wolfe on 04/29/2004 at 13:23. ( ) 12.217.9.230

I am having trouble with the hair standing up where I sewed the deer cape together. Normally it wouldn't be a big deal.....but I used the grooming buck form and the seem is seen from the front.

I searched the archives but couldn't seam to come up with the correct search.

Hair gel

After I sew, I'll usually tap down the seam with a rubber mallet, then put some strong hold hair gel over it, and anywhere else I have problem hairs. Let the mount dry, then comb it out.

You may need a hammer.

Two things are causing this, the skin is stretch way to tight and/or you have hair in the stitches.

When you mount the head, you need to make sure the skin is slack, not pulled off the back of the form.

Next make sure as you sew to take your time and dont rush it, sewing a good seam takes time and learning. No hair in the stitches is about as plain as it can be said.

Make sure you have a lot of glue up in the seam, this is going to help you adjust the skin, hide paste is not only for glueing the skin to the form, it helps you taxi the skin, work as much skin up on the deer form as possible!!

Work in the detail and pin them using duck necking cut in half and t-pins., Use 1/8 inch hardware cloth, (Not screen wire) and either pinthis on top of the seam or staple it.

Normal screen wire is not firm enough in my opinion.

Hardware cloth can be shaped and will hold that shape.

Make the HC a long and block off Y, to cover your y cut.

These staps will stop the next one and even this one if it not to dry.

Something to add

You can also dremmel a trough down the back of the form and fill it with clay . When sewing is complete take a mallet and lightly tap the seam into the clay . The hide paste coupled with the clay makes a very strong bond . It also helps the hair lay flat if you have rushed the sewing job . This is only a method used when your sewing technique is still needing a little work . Like John said, small stitches and no hair in the stitch will prevent the hair from coming out of place . I still use the trough method when I get in short hair ealry season animals just to make sure Im covered.
