Delicate Rug Question

Here's a dumb beginner question. I've done a number of bear rugs with good results. However, when working with thin skinned, delicate, furs like wolf, lynx, and fox, does anyone out there "back" the leather with fabric/spray adhesive to strengthen the hide prior to padding/felting? Obviously most such rugs will be wall hangings, and not be subject to much abuse. However, even with commercially tanned hides, I'd expect the thinner leathers to become somewhat brittle with age, and prone to cracking/splitting. A fabric mesh backing on the leather might preclude future problems? A crazy idea? Thoughts?

I have not had any problems with cats, they are pretty tuff.

Canines I have backed with cotton muslin and 333 spray glue.
