I live in New York, would I need to register for a permit, even if I just do occasional taxidermy work? DO you only need to register for a
permit if your makeing alot of buisness or can you get away with
handing a buisness card out to local fishermen and only getting a
few jobs to do in a year.
Also would I need to be certified.
How much does it cost to do this and is it even worth it. SHould I just do taxidermy as a hobby?

I am not sure what your asking but I will try and help. #1 the only permit you are required to have in NY is your Federal Migratory Bird Permit this alows you to mount migratory birds. #2 yes you need this even if you only do one bird a year. #3 if your handing out business cards, you have a business and you should get set up to take NYS Sales Tax. You will also be required to claim this as income on your taxes. As far as doing taxidermy as a hobby only you can decide that one. The federal permit is 25.00$ for three years. To me taxidermy is worth every minute I spend doing it.

Mal,
The DEC stopped requiring the $5 license back in the mid-to-late 90's. The license was a good cross check with the NYS Dept. of Taxation. Now with the license not being required, you should go to the tax dept. and get a sales tax number. If you take in less than $2500 per year in sales tax, then you only have to file once per year by March 20th. Sounds like you fit that bill... As Jack stated if you're doing any migratory birds then you need the $25 federal license... Good luck
Tom
Thanks for the info, some one told me you needed to pay out 500 a
year and you had to be certified for taxidermy.
I will take care of the tax buisness though
THanks
