What are you tumbling? Birds are done with the barrels half full of medium to keep them from bouncing against the sides. Hides can get by with less.
George, its called "media" no m.
Hey, didn't you know that George never makes mistakes.

I was planning on doing ducks and turkeys in the smaller barrel
and my capes and small animals in the larger one.i see when you order
the media it comes in 50 lbs boxes. Is this enough to fill my big
drum half way? and how many times is it possiable to reuse it before
i need to change? shipping is probable pretty expensive on these bulk
items, is there a product i could buy local, say a from a lumber mill
or feed store. thanks for your help once again!
I tumble birds in a 20 gallon Tumbler using corn cob grits. About one-third to one half full to absorb shock impact on the feathers. With hides I use the 50 gallon tumbler, with kiln dries hardwood sawdust. I like the hardwood better than pine, because I find it polished the hide nicer, and leaves less fine dust in the hair.
You do of course realize that Media. Is the plural of Medium? Don't you?
You can use cedar chip pet bedding from Walmart(about 1/2 a big bag for a 55 gal. size), and a 16 ounce cup of DP for tumbling hides. Add DP every 3-5 hides starting off, then less often. You'll be able to tell if you need to add-very little will shake out of the hide when you remove it from the tumbler(showing you need to add).-Susan
